The arithmetic nobody does first

Work backwards, not forwards.

A thousand joiners requires more than a thousand offers, because some accept and do not turn up. Those offers require several times as many final interviews. Those interviews require several times as many submissions. Those submissions require several times as many screened candidates. And those screens require a contacted pool several times larger again.
